Anelast ic tomography: a new perspective on upper mantle thermal structure

چکیده

Anelastic tomography provides new insights into the thermal structure of the earth's upper mantle. Lateral variations in Q are largest in the upper 300 km, but remain significant down to at least 500-600 km. They correlate with the distribution of plates in the upper 300 kin, in agreement with cooling plate models and with the distribution of hotspots at greater depths. Two major upwellings are revealed under Hawaii and northeastern Africa, which may originate at the bottom of the transition zone or deeper. Low Q structure beneath the main ridge systems, on the other hand, does not appear to extend vertically below about 300 km.

Superplumes from the core-mantle boundary to the lithosphere: implications for heat flux.

Three-dimensional modeling of upper-mantle anelastic structure reveals that thermal upwellings associated with the two superplumes, imaged by seismic elastic tomography at the base of the mantle, persist through the upper-mantle transition zone and are deflected horizontally beneath the lithosphere. This explains the unique transverse shear wave isotropy in the central Pacific. We infer that th...

New evidence for dislocation creep from 3-D geodynamic modeling of the Pacific upper mantle structure

Laboratory studies on deformation of olivine in response to applied stress suggest two distinct deformation mechanisms in the earth’s upper mantle: diffusion creep through diffusion of atoms along grain boundaries and dislocation creep by slipping along crystallographic glide planes. Each mechanism has very different and important consequences on the dynamical evolution of the mantle and the de...

Inferring upper-mantle structure by full waveform tomography with the spectral element method

S U M M A R Y Mapping the elastic and anelastic structure of the Earth’s mantle is crucial for understanding the temperature, composition and dynamics of our planet. In the past quarter century, global tomography based on ray theory and first-order perturbation methods has imaged longwavelength elastic velocity heterogeneities of the Earth’s mantle. However, the approximate techniques upon whic...

High-resolution body wave tomography models of the upper mantle beneath eastern China and the adjacent areas

[1] We present new 3-D tomographic models of VP, VS and VP/VS ratio anomalies in the upper mantle beneath EC and adjacent areas. This data was collected and interpreted with the goal of clarifying geodynamic processes that caused spatially variable event histories throughout Eastern China (EC) during Mesozoic to Cenozoic time. The tomographic images were constructed by inverting body wave trave...

Mantle reflectivity structure beneath oceanic hotspots

S U M M A R Y This study applies high-resolution Radon transform to a large set of SS precursors and explores the mantle reflectivity structure beneath 17 potentially ‘deep-rooted’ hotspots. The combined reduced time (τ ) and ray parameter (p) information effectively constrains the depth, spatial distribution and sharpness of upper-/mid-mantle reflectors. The olivine to wadsleyite phase boundar...
